Manufacturing technique: handmade recycled glass beads.
Technique for making painted glass beads from Ghana:
All the steps described below are hand made. Recycled glass is broken into small pieces for translucent beads, or ground to a fine powder using a mortar and pestle for opaque beads. The glass (in powder or fragments) is put into a clay mould and melted in a traditional kiln. After cooling down, the beads are painted with a wet mix of dyed glass powder applied with a thin cassava stalk and they are baked again to fix colours. Beads are polished by rubbing them together with sand and water on a smooth stone.
